Deputy Chief Gerald D. Kitchell has been with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department for 22 years, rising through the ranks from his days as a School Resource Officer to his current assignment. He has had numerous duties over the course of his career including patrol services, investigations, Internal Affairs, and Youth Crime Watch Officer.

Deputy Chief Kitchell has supervised many areas within the Department, including Operations and the Administrative and Investigative Divisions. He was instrumental in crafting many of the policies that are currently in effect today. During his time at the Investigative Division, he directed several high-profile criminal and personnel investigations. Deputy Chief Kitchell was one of the first Department members to attend the prestigious Southern Police Institute in the year 2001, and he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the Union Institute and University.
