A little boy noticing his dad relaxing in his lazy chair and enjoying a football game on CBS one Sunday afternoon asked his father, “Daddy, we’ve never seen the Miami Dolphins in real life. Can we go watch them next weekend at the stadium?” The boy’s father, knowing he was a little strapped for cash at the time, replied in a surprised but hopeful tone, “Little buddy, we may not be able to make it to the next game but I’m gonna’ make sure you get to see the Dolphins really soon.”
A few Sundays came and went and the little boy was hesitant to bother his father with the same question because he knew how hard his dad was struggling to make ends meet for his family. Just when the thoughtful little boy had lost all hope, his father came home late from work, lifted his son with a giant bear hug and playfully asked, “Guess who’s going to the football game this Sunday?” “No way!” answered the boy.
There they were, the following Sunday, December 3, 1973, sitting in the nosebleed section in the west end zone of the Orange Bowl. It was a beautiful, breezy 69 degree day with little humidity and a 7 mph breeze tickling quarterback Bob Griese’s jersey before he dropped back in the pocket and connected on a 21 yard touchdown strike to Paul Warfield. Moments later, Kicker Garo Yepremian’s extra point came straight at them and his little buddy’s arms stretched out in an attempt to catch the football but it fell sharply into the goal post safety net. The little boy looked at his father and remarked, “Aww, man!” The crowd erupted in a deafening roar and the father was suddenly lost in his own quiet little world as he studied the gleam and joy in his son’s eyes, thinking, “I will never forget this day.” Just then, his little boy looked up at him, smiled, and said, “I love you, Dad.”
Through the years, the boy’s father made it a priority to continue spending time with his son and family watching live Dolphin football. He believed if just one game could make such a huge impact, surely sharing and making more memories watching the Miami Dolphins would change their lives forever. He was right!
