Tackles Distracted Driving  MIAMI, Florida, September 2015 –

Multitasking is a predominant activity in today’s busier than ever society that allows us to complete multiple tasks simultaneously. However, its practice has never been acceptable behind the wheel. With the constant increase of demands from our personal and professional life, the temptation to split our focus is stronger than ever, creating a new and very dangerous safety hazard on the road: distracted driving.

According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), in 2013 distracted driving was the cause of 39,000 crashes in Florida resulting in 201 deaths and 33,000 injuries. A big misconception regarding distracted driving is that it doesn’t go beyond cellphone usage; however, as FLHSMV states, distracted driving is “any activity that takes the driver’s attention away from the task of driving”. This includes eating, applying makeup, and even playing with the radio.

Ford Motor Company is aware of the dangers distracted driving represent and as part of its commitment with helping provide safer roads for everyone, it has implemented for the third consecutive year “Ford Safe Driving Zone: Zona de Conducir Seguro”- a safety campaign in partnership with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department and LosTweens.com.

The campaign seeks to emphasize the importance of keeping our hands on the wheel and our eyes on the road at all times and will be implemented on school zones in Miami, Florida. The partnerships aim to create a greater conscience among drivers, especially teenagers, about what constitutes as distracted driving and how it affects everyone on and off the road.

Members of the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department will hand-deliver Safe Driving Zone banners to over 70 public schools in the Miami-Dade public school system.

The campaign will also engage schools and the community online with the help of LosTweens.com, a multicultural resource blog for parents raising teens and tweens. The site will host a social media campaign encouraging Miami schools to participate and receive a gift of safety equipment to help improve the schools’ safety programs.
