Making Schools Safe In Miami Dade
On September 18, 2017, while at Miami Southridge Senior High School during dismissal, Field Training Officer Carlos Rodas and Probationary Police Officer Naima Biamby heard students yelling, “She has a gun!” These students were referring to an adult female who was on school grounds walking towards the main entrance of the school.
The subject was immediately confronted by Officers Rodas and Biamby. As the subject leaned forward to reach for her wallet, Officer Rodas observed the firearm in the waistline of her back exposed. He calmly removed the firearm from her person, which was a Glock 19 loaded with three rounds of ammunition.
The officers were able to take the subject into custody without incident. The video surveillance footage showed the subject while she was on Miami Southridge Senior High School’s campus, retrieving the firearm from her vehicle and threatening to harm those who desired to engage in a physical altercation with her nephew. This situation could have easily escalated had it not been for the officers’ immediate response and actions. Officers Rodas and Biamby were at the right place, at the right time and their professional training were instrumental in the safe resolution of this incident. The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department proudly commends them on a job well done.
