Chief of Police and District Security

Chief Ian A. Moffett was born in Georgetown, Guyana and migrated to Toronto, Canada with his parents and sister at the age of six. In 1985, he moved to Miami, Florida with his family, and is currently employed by the Miami-Dade School Board as the Chief of Police and District Security for the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. Chief Moffett possesses a Master’s of Science Degree from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. He is a graduate of the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy Session #262 and the University of Louisville, Southern Police Institute Command Officers Development Course #55. He is also a proud graduate of Miami Southridge Senior High School. Chief Moffett has worked and trained with Multi-Agencies regarding responding to critical incidents and has conducted workshops in the area of Youth Violence, Gang Awareness, School Safety, Weapon of Mass Destruction, Emergency Management, and tactical training.

Chief Moffett is an adjunct professor for Southern New Hampshire University, Union Institute and University and Florida International University, and serves on several school safety and juvenile boards within the South Florida Community. He is currently on the Executive Boards for Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Southeast Domestic Security Task Force. On a national level, Chief Moffett is the President of the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officials (NASSLEO), Chapter Advisor for Friends of Safe Schools USA Foundation, serves on the National G.R.E.A.T Advisory Board and a Subject Matter Expert for the United States Department of Education on issues related to emergency management in schools.
